Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty. She came to be when she rose out on a pedestale of foam and the West Wind blew her to an Island, and the Three Graces of Beauty took care of her and dressed her in beautiful garments. They then took her to Mt. Olympus, where the other gods and goddess placed her in one of the thrones.
Zeus thought that since Aphrodite was so beautiful, that the gods would fight over her. So, he told Hephaestus, the god whom Zeus was sure wouldn't cause any trouble, to marry Aphrodite. So Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus, the unattractive god of fire. Aphrodite was drawn to Ares, though, the god of war. Although Hephaestus was good to Aphrodite, she wanted nothing to do with him.
Aphrodite got special treatment from many people because of her looks. Hephaestus made her a magic girdle, that she could make people fall in love with her and other people. Many gods thought she was beautiful, so it was quite foolish of Hephaetus. Aphrodite was an interesting goddess back in Ancient Greece, and it shows in the story.
